Note: The print was engraved by Ghisi prior to his return to Italy in 1569. The date of the printing of the engraving by Lafreri, who died in 1577, is not known (cf. Boorsch); Title from Boorsch; An engraving after Francesco Primaticcio's design for the ceiling of the Galerie d'Ulysse at Fontainebleau, destroyed in 1738-1739. The scene depicts the musical competition between Apollo and Pan described in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
