[Decorations made at Versailles in honor of the birth of the Duc de Bourgogne] (etching (print); Ouvrier, Jean (etcher, 1725-1784); Published: 1751; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 1383-074; 373827; accession number: 960084**)
Note: Louis-Joseph-Xavier was the first born of Louis, dauphin de France. He died at the age of ten. His three brothers became successively kings of France as Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X; The print represents the temporary architectural decorations for an illumination and a firework display; it was erected at Versailles in celebration of the birth of Louis-Joseph-Xavier, duc de Bourgogne, on December 30, 1751. The etching was begun by Martin Marvye and completed by Jean Ouvrier after a drawing by Charles Nicolas Cochin, who engraved on wood the crest with the royal coat of arms; The etching is a proof before letters. There are several white spots in the middle of the right half of the print; in one of them a group of figures emerges only as exterior contours. There are other areas of interrupted contact of the ink on paper, such as the plate frame, and the base of the crest.[1751] (34501/publishers)
