Note: The Roman printmaker Tommaso Piroli engraved reproductive prints and views of Rome; The aquatint printed in red-brown ink depicts the triumphal arch designed by the engineer Benedetto Piernicoli on the occasion of Pope Pius VII's entry into Rome on 3 July 1800, after the pope's election on 21 March at the conclave held in Venice; The ephemeral arch, erected at the entrance of the via del Corso, connects the twin churches of Santa Maria di Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli on Piazza del Popolo. Temporary platforms have been erected along the perimeter of the square. In the right foreground stands the obelisk from the Circus Maximus, amid crowds of viewers; Ink stamp printed in purple on recto: GV with an oval between the letters and an inventory number in pencil (1964); Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no.
