Note: Prud'hon's painting is now in the collections of the Musée du Louvre (Ref. 7340). An oil sketch for the painting is housed in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum (Ref. 84.PA.717); A printmaker and painter from a prominent family of artists in Paris, Alexandre Moitte taught drawing at the École militaire in Paris; The lithograph, printed on blue paper heightened with white chalk, reproduces Pierre-Paul Prud'hon's monumental painting commissioned to decorate the wall behind the judges' bench in the criminal courtroom of the Palace of Justice in Paris; A personification of Divine Vengeance is shown carrying a torch and in pursuit of a criminal who has left his victim lying on the ground. Divine Vengeance is accompanied by Justice holding a sword and a scale. Publication: [ca. 1808].
