Fvoco (etching (print); unknown printmaker ; published 1764; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 651318; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 1191))
Note: The Swiss architect, painter, and printmaker Giorgio Fossati from Morcote (Lago di Lugano), the brother of Davide Antonio and the father of Carlo Giuseppe and Domenico, was active in Venice. The print depicts a water float named Fire, designed by Giorgio Fossati for the regatta held in Venice on June 4, 1764 in celebration of the visit of Duke Edward Augustus of York; The barge or peotta is decorated with a grotto in which Vulcan, flanked by two Cyclops, hammer in hand, forges a thunderbolt arrow that is then carried to Venus by an eagle. Venus, who has asked Vulcan for Aeneas's armor, appears in a triumphal chariot led by two doves, accompanied by putti. The barge is propelled by male figures, possibly the personifications of zephyrs, who hold oars. Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**). Publication: [1764].
