Note: Draftsman and etcher from Valduggia, Novara, who was active in Rome; The print shows the plan of the conclave summoned upon the death of Pope Clement IX on December 9, 1669, and which resulted in the election of Cardinal Emilio Altieri as Pope Clement X on April 29, 1670; The list of the cardinals and the ground-plans of the Vatican Palace and of the Basilica of St. Peter's are displayed in the center of the etching. They are enclosed by sixteen vignettes of ceremonies and rituals, such as the "Liberatione de Carcerati per leggiero delitto" and the "Ordine col quale si portano le uiuande alle Ruote del Conclaue p[er] ciascun Cardinale"; A dedication to Cardinal Antonio Barberini by the architect Giovanni Battista Contini specifies that Barberini entrusted Contini with the design of the plan: All Em.mo et Reu.mo Sig.re Il Sig.re Card. Antonio ... / Conoscendo quale sia la mia fortuna / nell'essersi VE. degnata di comandar:/mi la fabrica del Conclaue ... / Gio Batta Contini; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no.
