Note: Pencilled on mount: Final state, "Avec la retouche, la planche rajustée dans le milieu"; In 1785, Charles-Clément Bervic announced in the Mercure de France that he had been granted permission to engrave a full-length portrait of King Louis XVI painted by Antoine-François Callet, a project which he completed in 1790. During the Reign of Terror, he broke the plate in two, and at the time of the Restoration, repaired it so that further impressions could be issued (cf. Roux); The engraving of Antoine-François Callet's standing portrait of Louis XVI is dated 1790 and shows the king in three-quarter view and in coronation robes. The portrait is enclosed in an illusionistic frame which is inscribed: LOUIS SEIZE / ROI DES FRANÇAIS ..; Forms part of the Leo Steinberg collection of prints (Special Collections accn. no. 2000.PR.16); Accompanied by Leo Steinberg's handwritten notes concerning bibliography, states and history of plate.
