The procession of Pope Clement VII and the Emperor Charles V after the coronation at Bologna on the 24 February MDXXX (etchings (prints); Nicolas Hogenberg (Netherlandish printmaker, ca. 1500-before...; Published: 1530; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 544514; accession number: 2000.PR.50*)
Note: Title supplied by cataloger from the 1875 book: The procession of Pope Clement VII and the Emperor Charles V after the coronation at Bologna on the 24th February MDXXX / designed and engraved by Nicolaus Hogenberg / reproduced in facsimile, with an historical introduction by Sir William Stirling Maxwell, baronet. Edinburgh : Edmonton & Douglas, 1875; Hogenberg did not give a title to his work, which is often incorrectly described as the "entry" of the Pope and the Emperor in Bologna. The Pope had arrived in the city on October 23, 1529, and the Emperor made his official entry on November 5 (cf. Stirling Maxwell); The set of prints includes two dedicatory inscriptions of six Latin verses each, engraved within architectural frames. The first is dedicated to the artists: Gratae et laboribvs aeqvae posteritati / Caesareas Sanctiqve Patris longo ordinetvr mas / aspice et artificem ter venerare manvm / tradere qvae potvit rigido mansvra metallo / nomina magnorvm tot generosa virvm / pictor Hoghenbergvs qvod per tva saecvla cernas / hoc tibi posteritas vivida fecit opvs; The second inscription is dedicated to the Emperor by the artist and his publisher: Divo et invicto Imperatori Carolo V.P.F. Avg. / Caesar et Hesperiis et qvi dominaris eois / accipe qvod tenebris te prohibebit opus / non fato veniente cades mvultosqve secvtvs / ignotvm longa nocte premere capvt / sed cvm victvris victvrvs Carole chartis / ibis ad antipodum regna secvtvs avvm. / Nicolao Hogenbergo & Engelberto Brvning; Hogenberg's initials, N.H., are engraved on the support holding up the spit of the roasting ox (pl. 36); The 38 etchings are bound in the numerical sequence marked at the bottom left corner of each plate. The two dedicatory inscriptions are not numbered, and are placed both at the beginning of the set, starting with the dedication to the artist; Prints are bound in an album with early (possibly contemporary) binding in sprinkled calfskin over pasteboard 39 x 32.5 cm. In the center of the front pastedown there is a book label of Theodore Besterman with the number 178 penciled in its lower right corner. Above it, an older book plate of Silvio Zipolo, stamped in indigo ink "Casella" and in pencil the number 31. At the upper left corner also a small label from the C.E. Rappaport Libri Rari Roma; Charles V was crowned King of Italy and Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Clement VII in Bologna. Hogenberg's etchings depict the procession which followed the imperial coronation in S. Petronius cathedral on 23 February 1530. The event was also painted in fresco by several contemporary Italian artists mentioned by Vasari. The prints show the continuous parade of nobility, representatives of the imperial provinces, military and clerical officials, with groups named in labels engraved underneath. Mounted or on foot, dressed in armor or ceremonial garb, the figures proceed from right to left. The Emperor and the Pope advance under a canopy decorated with the Imperial eagle (pl. 27) followed by units of the imperial army and their captains in armor, ending with a bank of unmanned cannons. The last three prints depict the distribution of food and drink to the people of Bologna. The crowd gathers around a tall arch topped by the imperial eagle, flanked by two lions from whose mouths red and white wine flows. Stewards turn the spit on which roasts an ox stuffed with birds and small animals (pl. 36-38); Nikolas Hogenberg, born in Munich, belonged to a family of painters and engravers active in the 16th and 17th century. There is some confusion about his first name (Hans or Johan in old sources) as well as his birth and death dates. The artist died shortly before Sept. 29, 1539. (Cf. Thieme-Becker); Inscription in 19th century black ink on top of first print: Titian des: - Vid: Vasari; The Getty Research Library has another set of Hogenberg's prints mounted on canvas kept as a scroll (acc. no. P910002).
