Procession of Pope Clement VII and the Emperor Charles V after the coronation at Bologna on the 24th February, MDXXX (prints (visual works); Nicolas Hogenberg (Netherlandish printmaker, ca. 1500-before...; Published: 1530; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 378064; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002* (item 24))
Note: Title from: The procession of Pope Clement VII and the Emperor Charles V after the coronation at Bologna on the 24th February MDXXX / designed and engraved by Nicolaus Hogenberg; / reproduced in facsimile, with an historical introduction by Sir William Stirling Maxwell, baronet. Edinburgh : Edmonton & Douglas, 1875; Hogenberg did not give a title to his work, which is often incorrectly described as the "entry" of the Pope and the Emperor in Bologna. The Pope had arrived in the city on October 23, 1529, and the Emperor made his official entry on November 5 (cf. Stirling Maxwell); The set of prints includes two dedicatory inscriptions of six Latin verses each, engraved within architectural frames. One is addressed to the Emperor by the artist and his publisher: Divo et invicto Imperatori Carolo V.P.F. Avg. / Caesar et Hesperiis et qvi dominaris eois / accipe qvod tenebris te prohibebit opvs / non fato veniente cades mvltosqve secvtvs / ignotvm longa nocte premere capvt / sed cvm victvris victvrvs Carole chartis / ibis ad antipodvm regna secvtvs avvm. / Nicolao Hogenbergo & Engelberto Brvning. At the bottom of same print, a two line inscription: Cvm Privilegio Sacratiss Imp Caroli V opvs hoc absolvtvm est / Nicolao Hogenbergo artifice. Engelberto Brvning socio impensarvm; The second inscription is dedicated to the artist: Gratae et laboribvs aeqvae posteritati / Caesareas Sanctiqve Patris longo ordinetvr mas / aspice et artificem ter venerare manvm / tradere qvae potvit rigido mansvra metallo / nomina magnorvm tot generosa virvm / pictor Hogenbergvs qvod per tva saecvla cernas / hoc tibi posteritas vivida fecit opvs; The dedicatory inscriptions are not always placed in the same order in various sets known since subsequent states were printed and individually mounted as scrolls or bound as albums. Stirling Maxwell describes six states, of which the first has no additional armorial and genealogical inscriptions above the images. He considers it very rare, since he and the authors he consulted had heard of, but never seen one. He suggests that such sets be considered as proofs before the first state. The two sets in the Getty Research Library have no inscriptions above the images; The initials of the artist, N.H., are engraved on the support holding up the spit of the roasting ox (pl. 36); The prints are pasted on a long strip of canvas, each one slightly overlapping the next, in the numerical order marked at the bottom left corner of each plate from 1 to 38, preceded by the dedication to the Emperor, and ending with the dedication to the artist. The first is marked with the letter A (a reminiscence of the states marked alphabetically). The prints are painted with watercolor and gouache, with gold highlights on jewelry and horse harnesses. A border of black paint (ca. 3.5 cm. on top, 4-4.5 cm. on the bottom) covers the upper and lower edges of the prints and the canvas. The coloring of the sky does not always reproduce the clouds visible on the unpainted prints. In some places, mostly along the junction lines, some details are left unfinished after the application of the ground color, such as a horse head without eye, nostril and mouth lines after being painted in brown (pl. 1, right border); Charles V was crowned King of Italy and Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Clement VII in Bologna. Hogenberg's etchings depict the procession which followed the imperial coronation in S. Petronius cathedral on 23 February 1530. The event was also painted in fresco by several contemporary Italian artists mentioned by Vasari. The prints show the continuous parade of nobility, representatives of the imperial provinces, military and clerical officials, with groups named in labels engraved underneath. Mounted or on foot, dressed in armor or ceremonial garb, the figures proceed from right to left.
