Note: Ugo da Carpi, a printmaker from Carpi in the region of Modena, developed the technique of chiaroscuro woodcuts; A chiaroscuro woodcut rendered in several shades of green that reproduces a design by Raphael for the set of tapestries of the acts of the Apostles commissioned by Pope Leo X to decorate the lower walls of the Sistine Chapel; In its first state, the print bears the date 1518. On the steps appears the woodcut text: RAPHAEL.VRBINAS / PER.VGO.DA.CARPO; Forms part of the Leo Steinberg collection of prints (Special Collections accn. no. 2000.PR.16); Accompanied by Leo Steinberg's handwritten notes concerning sales. Publication: [ca. 1518].
