Representation of the royal fire-work perform'd by the directions of Coll. Hopkey and Coll. Borgard on the river of Thames / before Whitehall, ye 7th of July 1713. being ye day appointed for a publick thanksgiving for the general peace (engraving (print); Lens, Bernard (1682-1740); Published: 1713; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 528589; accession number: P970001*)
Note: The mezzotint depicts the centerpiece of the celebrations held in London to commemorate the Peace of Utrecht signed between England, France and Holland, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The firework machine is made of two pairs of coupled columns supporting allegorical figures and a victory wreath at the center enclosing Queen Anne's monogram, surmounted by a crown. The date of the event is inscribed on the bases of the columns. The mezzotint is signed in the lower right corner: B. Lens fec. et exd; Bernard Lens the younger was born to a family of Flemish artists who settled in London around mid-17th century and were known as painters, draftsmen, miniaturists, engravers and teachers. They often collaborated in their activities, which sometimes makes it difficult to identify their individual works. Bernard the younger also kept an art shop where the public could acquire prints from engravings made by him and by the other members of the family. According to G.K. Nagler, he used to sign his own: "B. Lens exc." Publication: [1713].
