[Hipermestra] (etchings (prints); Degli Alli, Silvio (etcher); published 1658; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 554353; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 266))
Note: Pier Francesco Cavalli wrote the score of the ballet, Ferdinando Tacca created the stage settings and floats, and Stefano della Bella designed the costumes. Tommaso Guidoni was the choreographer of the dances; Impressions of the etchings were issued in: Descrizione della presa d'Argo e de gli amori di Linceo con Hipermestra festa teatrale rappresentata dal signor principe cardinal Gio. Carlo di Toscana ... (In Firenze : Nella Stamperia di S.A.S, 1658). The later publication of the libretto in Delle poesie dramatiche ... (1689-1690) is illustrated with derivative prints signed "M. Bellon", which do not include the proscenium arch; Italian noble who served as page or Paggio di Valigia to Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici; The prints depict the opera Hipermestra commissioned by Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici and performed on June 18, 1658, in the theater of the Accademia degli immobili, Florence in honor of the birth of Felipe Prosper, son of King Philip IV of Spain; Prints [1] to [12] show stage settings of the opera (cf. Molinari, ill. 102-112). They reveal the love story of the daughter of Danaus, Hypermnestra, and Lynceus, affected by the intervention of deities, such as Phoebus Apollo, Thetis, Venus and Vulcan. Each print is framed by a proscenium arch displaying the emblem of the Accademia degli immobili: a shield depicting a windmill, ornamented with a scroll containing the motto: IN SVA MOVENZA E FERMO. Beneath the arms is a scroll with the inscription: IMMOBILI. Print [13] depicts the auditorium of the theater of the Accademia degli immobili, seen from the stage (cf. Blumenthal, no. 90); Library has another impression of print [13] in the Italian Theater Collection: accn. no. P980004 (bx.5,f.2); Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**). Published: [1658]. 13 prints
