Note: Impressions of the etching were issued with the booklet Descrizione delle feste fatte in Firenze per le reali nozze di Ferdinando II ... (In Fiorenza : Per Zanobi Pignoni, 1637); The print depicts the carousel or equestrian ballet performed in Florence on the evening of July 15, 1637, as part of the festivities celebrating the wedding of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand II to Vittoria della Rovere; It is composed of seventeen compartments. The central compartment shows the equestrian ballet in the amphitheater of the Boboli gardens, revealing a dragon, torchbearers, cavaliers and the float of Armida, drawn by four elephants; it is framed by tableau curtains adorned with the Medici and the Della Rovere armorial shields. The upper central compartment depicts the float of Love, with a view of the Palazzo Pitti in the background. An inscription is printed below the image: CARRO D'AMORE. The fifteen other compartments show the choreographic figures of the carousel; Library another impression of the etching that forms part of the Italian Theater Collection: accn. no.
