Note: The print is a copy of Jacques Callot's etching known as L'Éventail, issued by the publisher and printmaker Nicolas Bonnart who was established on the rue Saint-Jacques in Paris. The engraving depicts the mock naval battle between the weavers and dyers, performed on the Arno river, Florence, on the evening of July 25, 1619. It shows the Arno between Ponte alla Carraia and Ponte a Santa Trinità, with a sweeping view of Florence in the background. Frigates fire at each other before a display of fireworks. The view of the feast is enclosed within a cartouche whose shape recalls that of Florentine fans. Several figures are standing or seated on the volutes adorning the cartouche; one watches the spectacle using a telescope; Library has another copy of Callot's etching issued by François Collignon (copy of the type 3) that forms part of the Italian Theater Collection: accn. no.
