Note: Son of King Philip V of Spain, Louis succeeded to the throne on January 15, 1724 upon the abdication of his father. On February 9 he was formally proclaimed king. He fell ill, however, on August 19 and died 12 days later; Impressions of the etchings were issued with Niccolò Marcello Venuti's description of the obsequies: Esequie di Luigi I. cattolico re delle Spagne ... (In Firenze : Nella Stamperia di S. A. R. per li Tartini, e Franchi, M.DCC.XXIV); The prints depict the funeral decoration for the obsequies "in absentia" of King Louis I of Spain, celebrated in the Church of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, on October 26, 1724; Two cross-sections of the Church of Santa Maria Novella are shown, one of the choir, the other of the nave; Ferdinando Ruggieri was active in Florence as an architect and printmaker; Library has another impression of the etchings bound and folded in Niccolò Marcello Venuti's Esequie di Luigi I. cattolico re delle Spagne ..; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
