[Giostra dei venti] (etching (print); Greuter, Mathieu (etcher, 1564?-1638); published 1608; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 552491; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 218))
Note: Impressions of the etching were issued with a poem in verse attributed to Lorenzo Franceschi: Ballo e giostra de' venti ... (In Firenze : Appresso i Givnti, 1608). Others were included in the second edition of Camillo Rinuccini's description of the festivities: Descrizione delle feste ... (In Firenze : Appresso i Givnti, 1608); The draftsman and etcher Mathieu Greuter was presumably born in Strasbourg, but he may also have been Flemish. From 1606, he was active in Rome, where he died in 1638; The print depicts the equestrian ballet and joust Giostra dei venti performed in Piazza Santa Croce, Florence on October 27, 1608 as part of the festivities celebrating the wedding of Maria Maddalena of Austria to Prince Cosimo II; Piazza Santa Croce is shown transformed for the occasion as an arena with scaffolds and grandstands for the public. Cavaliers form three concentric circles in the center of the arena. On the left, the chariot of Oceanus is drawn by a whale. The cavaliers and "apparati" are numbered 1 to 32 and A to C; Watermark; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
