Note: The Bolognese painter Gioacchino Pizzoli received commissions for the decoration of palaces and churches primarily in Bologna, but also in France (Nevers) and in Venice. Other impression: Bologna, Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio, Raccolta Gozzadini, c. 2/38; The print depicts the catafalque designed by Gioacchino Pizzoli for the obsequies of Jacopo Filippo Spada, celebrated in 1707 in the Church of San Paolo in Bologna; The catafalque of the late senator is seen at the crossing of the church below the central dome. It is ornamented with the heraldic emblems of the Spada family, the fleur-de-lys and sword, and with funerary urns, festoons, chandeliers and skulls. It displays a portrait medallion of the late marchese and is inscribed: Haereditariam / in Deum venerationem / Amator / in se ipso reddidit ampliorem / et qui profusus in homines / nec avarus esset in Deum / ipsam vitam dedit et coelo; Its ornamentation with imitation marble and porphyry is described in: Relatione delle solenni esequie celebratesi per la morte del sig. marchese e senatore Amadore Spada ... (1708); Bolognese painter and etcher, who was active in Bologna, Modena, Parma and Ferrara; Trimmed within plate mark; annotated in brown ink on verso: Bufagnotti; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
