Note: A royal and imperial palace in Paris, adjacent to the Louvre, on the right bank of the Seine. The original palace was begun under Catherine de Médicis in 1564, and underwent additions and alterations in the following 200 years. It was the Parisian residence of most French monarchs, from Henry IV to Napoleon III, until it was burned by the Paris Commune in 1871.
