Note: Crayon-manner lithographs, hand-colored with watercolor and some gouache. The sheets of handmade wove paper measure 27 x 43 cm. Some are watermarked: M. Muller. Each is numbered at lower left and signed on the stone at lower right: J.B. Lachmüller in Bbg. (with minor variations; partly effaced on no. 17). In folder of tan paper watermarked: J. Whatman, and lithographed with title and imprint. Brief legends identify the characters represented. The Faschingsnarr leads the procession (no. 1). Ethnic types include: Greeks (no. 8), Moors (no. 13), English (Lord Cokborn und sein Jockei, no. 14), Tartars (nos. 16-17), Italians (Abalino der bekannte Bandit mit dem venetianischenn Gesandten Parizini, no. 18), Chinese (no. 20), Jews (nos. 22-23), a countryman from the Bamberg area and his wife (no. 24). Professional types include: Ober Leib Chirurgen Dr. Flitenhauer, Unterleib Chirurgin Frau Zimpimperle (no. 4), Doktor Lux (no. 11), Apotheker Stösel (no. 12) with his clyster-cannon, a group of millers in white and chimneysweeps in black (no. 25-26). Commedia dell'arte figures include: Harlekin (no. 8), Pantaleon (no. 8), Pierot (no. 9), Kolombina u. Leander (no. 9), Policinello (no. 25). Other characters include: a sorcerer (no. 9), wild men (no. 13), Quasimodo (no. 22), and bringing up the rear of the procession, a wagon with personifications of the fasts (no. 28). There is considerable cross dressing (the Jungfern-Regiment (nos. 1-5), Jungfer Salome (no. 10), the "female" musicians in nos. 15, 27. There is some reversal of sexual roles: on the wagon in no. 19. It is the women who are drinking and playing cards and the men who are spinning and caring for a baby; In modern cloth-covered box. Publication: Bamberg: J.B. Lachmüller, [1837].
