Obelisks and columns (engravings (prints); publisher: Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (Italian printmaker, 17...; Published: after ca. 1666; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 356197)
Note: The 6 plates of columns and obelisks carry the name of "Sixtus V Pont. Max." above the Rossi imprint on each engraving's cartouche. Two views engraved by Louis Rouhier of the Obelisco Panfilio in Bernini's fountain in piazza Navona follow. An additional 3 engravings bound in are plans and views of the theater at Villa Adriana engraved by Paolo Fidanza after drawings of architect Giuseppe Pannini, the latter's dedication dated 1. Settembre 1753; The 6 structures attesting to the pope's interest in Rome's monuments include Columna Traiana, Columna Antonina, the Egyptian obelisk before S. Giovanni in Laterano, the obelisk in the piazza San Pietro, the Egyptian obelisk in the piazza del Popolo, and an obelisk in the piazza before S. Maria Maggiore, are probably the "foglio reale" engravings listed by Rossi in his 1689 Indice delle stampe, p. 20-21; The engravings relating to Sixtus V appear sufficiently similar to plates prepared by Nicolas van Aelst in 1589 after Ambrogio Brambilla, to be copies with revisions occasioned by changes in the settings due to passage of time, or reworked plates. The Van Aelst prints appear in collections of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae as do Rossi's, occasionally, as well. Cf. copy 1, v. 2 of the Getty collection for Van Aelst's (Special Oversize 90-F104). Rossi also published somewhat earlierthe smaller similar B. Rossi-G. Maggi engravings of some of the same subjects. Publication: Si stampano in Roma : da Gio. Jacomo de Rossi, alla pace, [after 1666?].
