Baurn Hochzeit (playing cards; Göbl, Andreas Benedictus (fl. 1765-1792); published ca. 1765; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 321396;)
Note: A set of 78 playing cards comprised of four suits (diamonds, clubs, hearts, spades), four face cards per suit (king, queen, knight, knave, shown in full figure), 10 number cards per suit (ace through 10), and 21 atouts, tarot or trump cards illustrating a Bavarian "Peasant wedding" procession; The tarot or trump cards bear Roman numerals above and 2-line verses below. Each shows a plumed-hat horse rider taking part in a procession, or a horse-drawn wagon laden with food. An unnumbered card, perhaps also a trump card, shows a man and a woman playing music in a pastoral setting. The armorial bearings of Bavaria (a rampant lion in a shield and a round escutcheon with a lozenge-shaped pattern) appear on several cards. The knave or valet of clubs holds a doll, which is the Münchner Kind'l, the mascot of the city of Munich; Andreas Benedictus Göbl was a cardmaker in Munich; Cardboard case covered with leather embossed with a floral and twisted ribbon pattern; lettering "Baurn / Hochzeit" embossed and in black, inside is lined with decorated papers; Library's set includes a duplicate of the Queen of spades. Publication: [ca. 1765]. "Munchen"--inscribed on the king of diamonds card. "Andreas Benedictus Gobl"--inscribed on the knave of clubs card. Lozenge-shaped pattern with stars printed in blue over a white background on verso of cards. The rectos of the cards were colored by stencil and hand, in ink and gold; the edges are gilt.
