Feste della Chinea (engravings (prints); various printmakers; depicted works are by various artists; published 1722-1785; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 350512)
Note: Title derived from the name of the event represented by the illustrations. Two days of events (fireworks were a major feature) are represented by two plates for each occasion of the ritual presentation of a fine white horse (chinea) and some 7000 gold ducats as tribute to the incumbent pope by the Kingdom of Naples (later Kingdom of the two Sicilies) represented at the events by the princely Roman family of Colonna. Days were the 29th and 30th of June honoring Sts. Peter and Paul. Until the hiatus of 1734-1737 (occasioned by political events) the macchine de' fuochi d'artificio were largely allegorical/mythological in nature, after the break they continued thus until 1745 after which they became predominantly architectural. The dates of this series represent a revival of a tradition established in the 15th century. Architects and designers responsible for the elaborate constructions include Alessandro Specchi, Gabrielle Valvassori, probably Nicola Michetti though not recorded on plates, Marco Tuscher, Michelangelo Specchi, J.-L. Le Lorrain, François Hutin, Pietro Parrocel, and Francesco Preziado, and by 1751 Paolo Posi until 1776, followed by Giuseppe Palazzi; Artists and engravers include Gasparo Massi, Filippo Vasconi, Giuseppe Pozzi, Pietro Parrocel, Michele Sorelló, François Hutin, J.-L. Le Lorrain, Francesco Preziado, Carlo Bellicard, Giuseppe Vasi in tandem with Posi and Palazzi, Franco Barbazza, Francesco Aquila and Andrea Rossi; Pyrotechniciens from Castel S. Angelo include Francesco Scardovelli and Giuseppe Silici; Library's set of engravings comprise 83 engravings of the possible 106 as it would appear that there were no engravings for the years of hiatus, 1734-1737, for 1768 when the event took place in the mornings, and for 1777, 1779, 1780, 1781 and 1783, 1784, 1786, 1787, although drawings for those occasions exist. (Cf. Della Chinea, p. 164-168); Library has: 1724.1, 1727.1-2, 1729.1-2, 1738.1-2, 1739.2, 1740.2, 1741.1-2 through 1744.1-2, 1745.2 through 1767.1-2, 1769.1-2 through 1776.1-2, 1778.1-2, 1782.1-2, 1785.1-2; Library's set of engravings, mounted to 50 x 70 cm., in two bound boxes with spine title: Bellezze architettoniche della Chinea in Roma, while the catalogue of the collection bears the title: Meraviglie architettoniche per le feste della presentazione della Chinea, 1722-1785, with Feste della Chinea at head of title.
