Note: Title from above center in the border; Inscriptions in the cartouches: "Desine tot miserae ... cuncta repente cadant" (lower left); "Nec tu Heracliti ... toleres, abstineasq decet" (lower center); "Mortalis tibi stultitiam ... concurrentes dinumeres atomos" (lower right); Born in Ala, near Verona, Fontana died in Innsbruck, where he had served as court painter to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria; The print depicts Heraclitus and Democritus standing on either side of a globe, both considering the miseries and folies of human affairs, the former weeping, the latter laughing; The scene is enclosed within a frame ornated with emblems and four inscribed cartouches. Unsigned and undated, it is listed in Fontana's catalog by Bartsch, who writes that he believes it to be the artist's invention; Watermark: Siren in circle... (cf. Briquet 13900 and 13901, dated 1533-39 and 1566). Publication: [ca. 1560].
