Note: An architect and painter from Haraucourt (Meurthe-et-Moselle), Joseph Chamant followed Francis Stephen of Lorraine to Tuscany in 1738, and from 1747 was in the service of the emperor in Vienna; Architect and etcher, who was active in Florence between 1733 and 1755; The etching printed in red-brown ink depicts the triumphal arch designed by Joseph Chamant and erected in Florence on the occasion of the coronation of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, 1745. It is dedicated to the emperor's brother Charles Alexandre; The opening of the arch reveals the statue of the emperor crowned with laurel, standing on a pedestal inscribed: TERTIUS AUSTRASIAE / TUSCUS REX / ECCE SECUNDUS / FRANCISCUS / CAESAR PRIMUS / IN IMPERIO. A putto flying above the statue holds an inscribed banner: Venite Gentes, et videte / Regem vestrum in Diademate; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**).
