Note: Summoned by Pope Benedict XIII during a jubilee year, the chief purpose of the council was the suppression of Jansenism; Impressions of the etching were issued in: Concilium Romanum in Sacrosancta Basilica Lateranensi celebratum, anno Universalis Jubilaei MDCCXXV a Sanctissimo patre & Dño Nostro Benedicto Papa XIII, pontificatus Sui anno I (Romae : Ex typographia R. Bernabò, 1725); Title from inscription in scroll above the Gothic canopy of the papal altar; The print depicts the council held at the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome from April 15 to May 29, 1725; A view of the nave of the basilica in which the assembly is convened is shown. Two bays of the nave have been closed to the east of the papal altar, adorned with temporary structures with seats for the archbishops, bishops, and abbots; Library has another impression of the etching bound in: Concilium Romanum in Sacrosancta Basilica Lateranensi celebratum, anno Universalis Jubilaei MDCCXXV a Sanctissimo patre & Dño Nostro Benedicto Papa XIII, pontificatus Sui anno I; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no.
