Fr: Joannes Baptista Constantius. de Assisio, artium et sacrae th[eo]l[o]giae doctor, totius Ordinis Minorum S. Francisci conventualium, post seraphicum patriarcham minister generalis LXXXVI. charitatis, et pacis abundantiam dilectis religionis nostrae amicis, et benefactoribus (engraving (print); Klauber, Joseph Sebastian (engraver, ca. 1700-1768); Published: 17--; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 549320; (CMalG)1366-954; accession number: P910002** (FF. 10))
Note: Joseph Sebastian Klauber established a printing workshop in Augsburg with his brother Johann Baptist. As in this print, the two brothers often added to their names "Cath." (for Catholic). Their production of prints includes leaves for pilgrims, biblical stories, and portraits of Catholic clergymen; The print is dedicated to the Franciscan Joannes Baptista Constantius and may commemorate Constantius's ministry of the Franciscan Conventuals. According to Holzapfel, "Ioannes Baptista Costanzo von Biella" was elected minister general of the Franciscan Conventuals in 1753 at the Conventuals' general chapter in Rome; The engraving shows the cross section of the interior of a Baroque church crowned by three domes. Above the central dome appears a triangle, as well as the three figures of the Trinity. Through an oculus of the central dome, rays of light descend into the church towards the Virgin Mary who is surrounded by the apostles and seated on top of an inscribed tablet. A long inscription in the tablet describes the Franciscan Order's mission, mentioning its patron saint, the Virgin Mary, as well as its founder St. Francis of Assisi. It recalls the Franciscan friars' activities, which include fasting, prayer and contemplation. The tablet is erected in the center of the church, occupying most of its space; its pedestal is adorned with lace paper that has been attached and glued to the print. It is flanked by figures in Franciscan cloaks standing on a pedestal, as well as by putti holding medallions that show portrait groups; Forms part of the Collection of festival prints, 1530-1887 (Special Collections accn. no. P910002**); Trimmed within plate mark. Published: [17--]
