Cosmvs Medices Floreniae Dvx II (engraving (print); Casa, Nicolò della (fl. 1543-1547), after Baccio Bandinelli...; published 1544; Getty Research Institute, Special Collections (Los Angeles, ...; 542098; accession number: 2000.PR.33**;)
Note: Title and date from inscription on print; Formerly attributed by Vasari to Enea Vico (Vite, pt. 3). For attribution to Nicolò della Casa see Bartsch, Passavant, or Robert-Dumesnil; Robert-Dumesnil describes two states: one with and one without the address of the printer Antoine Lafréry, "ANT. LAFRERI", in the lower left corner. Both states include della Casa's address inscribed on a shell in the lower margin: "N. D. LA CASA. F." The print in the Edward B. Greene collection at Yale University includes della Casa's address only and is identified as state II. Oberhuber describes a similar state in the collection of Graphische Sammlung Albertina; Library's print is trimmed in the lower margin, with loss of image and della Casa's, and in some states, also Lafreri's addresses. A reproductive print after Baccio Bandinelli's drawing, possibly preceding a sculpted portrait of Cosimo I as Hercules (cf. Richelson, Oberhuber). The Duke is shown in knee-length frontal view, turning his head to the right. His right hand rests on his hip, his legs are spread apart; he holds a club in his left hand. His muscular appearance, short and curly hair, and a trimmed beard are part of Hercules iconography, which in Cosimo's time was inspired by the recently discovered (1540) sculpture known as the Farnese Hercules. The Duke is represented in armor and surrounded by weapons. The armor is richly decorated with mythological scenes and motifs related to the life and deeds of Hercules. Behind his back is visible a sheaf of arrows, with a bow and a halberd. To the left of the sheaf of arrows, a small scroll bears the inscription "BACIVS BANDINEL FLO.s 1544". In the upper right, a lion's skin, topped by a scroll and two lion heads, bears the inscription "COSMVS / MEDICES / FLORENT / IAE DVX / .II." To the left a shield bearing a gorgoneion, and to the right a feathered helmet decorated with a mythological battle scene, are visible in the lower part of the image; The print is trimmed at the bottom and at the left margin, with loss to image and della Casa's address. It is mounted on a thick sheet of wove paper, that is hinged to another larger sheet. The missing portions of the image are sketched in pencil on the primary support sheet, including the printer's address "de laCasa S." in the lower right corner. The secondary large sheet has three ink stamps: "Mappe 25", in the lower left corner; "Blatt 3", in the lower right corner; "Bild 4498", below the image. In pencil below the print: "910-14".
