Note: Signed in pencil at lower right; "LUMIÈRE. 50 épr."--at upper left; Also known as: Light; In this lithograph displaying a dramatic scale shift and chiaroscuro composition, two small figures stand before a large window through which appears the face and hand of a monumental, pensive figure. The “meaning” of the print seems open to the viewers’ own deciphering. Maybe the “pensive head” (as Redon initially called the print) represents the illumination or light that the individual thinker can cast upon society.
