Note: This object illustrates the importance of pedagogical practice in Joseph Beuys's work. After being dismissed from the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, Beuys undertook a series of public lectures, illustrating his "expanded concept of art," which incorporated science, economics and social issues. Some of these blackboards were preserved and are exhibited as art objects. The object noted here is an example created April 20, 1973, at his "12 Hour Lecture - An Homage to Anachrsis (Anacharsis) Cloots" at Melville College in Edinburgh, Scotland. The marks include some of Beuys's typical symbols and the name of the eighteenth-century social theorist Anarcharsis Cloots.
