Seated Figure Bottle (bottle; Unknown Moche; 2nd–5th century ; Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City, New York state, U...; 82.1.30 ; )
Note: This object is an example of the stirrup-spout vessel that was popular for several centuries in Pre-Columbian Peru. This type of vessel is characterized by its unique composition of two branches and a single spout, a design that may have been intended to stop the evaporation of liquids. Stirrup-spout bottles were created in a variety of sculptural forms, often depicting human figures that ranged from the common to the sacred. The human figure illustrated in the present work wears a headdress decorated with a feline face, possibly indicating the figure’s profession or rank. At the time of its production, this figure may have featured inlaid eyes as well as ornamentation on its ears, nose, and wrists.
