Colt Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver, .44 Caliber, Serial Number 12406 (rev$00olver; Samuel Colt (American, 1814-1862); Gustave Young, engraver; ca. 1853; Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City, New York state, U...; 1995.336 )
Note: This piece is one in a set of three pairs of revolvers with gold inlay produced circa 1853 and likely intended as exhibition pieces. In 1854, at the onset of the Crimean War, Colt traveled to Europe with this set of embellished revolvers, setting in motion a persistent campaign to market his arms to both sides of the conflict. As part of his campaign, Colt presented one revolver from each pair in the set (including the present revolver’s mate, now in Saint Petersburg at the Hermitage) to Czar Nicholas I of Russia. Shortly thereafter, the revolver described here is thought to have been given to Sultan Abdülmecid of Turkey in Constantinople. It is engraved with patriotic motifs and is a prime example of the technical and artistic qualities characteristic of Colt’s embellished arms.
