San Lorenzo (church (building); Brunelleschi, Filippo (Italian architect, sculptor, 1377-144...; begun 1421; through 1470)
Note: Large church located at the center of the main market district of Florence. Noted as the burial place of several of the Medici family, from Cosimo il Vecchio to Cosimo III. Founded in 393, rebuilt in 11th century; current structure dates to 15th century. The facade was never completed. The church of the Medici family, the current San Lorenzo was built largely during the 15th century on the site of a Romanesque church. Brunelleschi was formerly associated with the construction of the entire church, though he is now believed to have designed only the Old Sacristy.
