Equestrian Figure (statue; unknown Lower Niger; 13th/15th century; National Museum of African Art (Washington, DC, United State...; 86-12-2)
Note: Equestrian figure with a quiver slung across the back diagonally from the right shoulder down. The elaborate dress of the figure suggests ceremonial military attire, and it may represent one of the warriors who were once allies of the Malian emperor Sundjata Keita (ca. 1210-ca. 1260). Based on stylistic comparisons with similar figures, it can be tentatively dated to some time between the 13th and 15th centuries.
