Theodosius Arrives at Ephesus (glass, stained (visual works); unknown French; between 1205 and 1210 )
Note: Probably from the cathedral at Rouen. The legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus was very popular in the Middle Ages, but the only known extensive cycle of this story in stained glass was from the nave of the cathedral of Rouen. This panel is stylistically similar to a window devoted to Saint John the Evangelist still found in the cathedral's nave, and both have a light, bright palette of relatively unusual colors. The Seven Sleepers were the heroes of a famous legend that, because it affirmed the resurrection of the dead, had a lasting popularity in all Christendom and in Islam during the Middle Ages.
