Born in 1818 in Berlin, Heinrich Kiepert has been fascinated with geography since his childhood and made a life-long career in cartography. His most important set of maps is the Formae Orbis Antiqui, the fulfillment of his desire for a definitive classical atlas. This reprint is the first in more than eighty years, when the last map of the atlas was originally published. It reintroduces an atlas that, despite immense strides in cartography and classical scholarship, has yet to be superseded.

When Kiepert died in 1899, with only one-sixth of the atlas completed, his collaborator and son, Richard, endeavored to finished the project. For the next thirteen years, maps in the atlas were published singly or in pairs, until Richard died in 1915, leaving eleven of the planned thirty-six maps outstanding.

This edition consists of a reprint of the twenty-five plates published by Heinrich and Richard Kiepert and their notes in the original German. Also included is an appendix of four plates representing the "Carta Corografica ed Archeologica dell'Italia Centrale." An introduction in English gives a brief history of Kiepert and his work. The maps, including legends and place names, are in Latin. Published by Edizioni Quasar and distributed by the J. Paul Getty Museum.
