In 1984, archaeologists working in the ruins of a Roman villa excavated a remarkable floor mosaic depicting Orpheus and the Beasts. This publication chronicles the two-year project, undertaken jointly by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, to lift the mosaic (using an unusual "rolling" technique), supply it with a new aluminum and fiberglass support, and replace it in situ. Environmental monitoring and the installation of a protective shelter are also covered, along with historical and iconographic background. The clearly illustrated, step-by-step discussion of the procedures used in the conservation of this mosaic will be of interest to all conservators.
