Gallery Course

August Sander in Context
Tour the exhibition with Virginia Heckert, associate curator, Department of Photographs, the J. Paul Getty Museum. Also view contemporaneous portraits by other German photographers in the Photographs Study Room to learn why Sander's composite photographic portrait of the German people remains influential. The course concludes with the "portraits" of anonymous industrial structures made by Bernd and Hilla Becher.

Course fee $30; $20 students. Open to 25 participants.

Point-of-View Artist Talks

Photographer Catherine Opie, whose portraits and architectural landscapes explore issues of place and identity, discusses the work and influence of August Sander and Bernd and Hilla Becher. Sign up at the Museum Information Desk beginning at 3:00 p.m. the day of the program.

Film Screening

August Sander's People of the Twentieth Century
Reiner Holzemer's documentary interweaves historical footage, photographs, and interviews with a former assistant of the artist, museum curators, and his daughter and grandson to elucidate Sander's distinctive approach to portraiture during the Weimar Republic. Paired with tours of the exhibition by Museum educators.
