California in the 1930s: The Documentarian Impulse
California in the 1930s: The Documentarian Impulse
Kevin Starr, state librarian and professor of history at University of Southern California, lectures on the vital coalescence of such disparate art forms as the novel, photography, mural art, journalism, and even government reports to document the anguish of the Great Depression.

Sunday, October 27, 4:00 p.m.

Frames of Reference: Photographers on Photography
Photographer Mary Ellen Mark speaks about her work recording difficult subjects during travels across the United States, Mexico, and India. Like Dorothea Lange, Mark has documented the realities of homelessness in the United States. Her lecture includes some of these images as well as her record of women's lives in a U.S. mental hospital and in an Indian brothel.

Sunday, November 17, 4:00 p.m.

Performance

Gordon Getty Concert
From the Dustbowl to Nashville
A musical tribute to Dorothea Lange with Buddy and Julie Miller, and Tim Easton. Inspired by the Depression-era photography of Lange, these three singer/songwriters from Texas, Ohio, and Tennessee blend soulful Americana with blues-tinted country and dusty rock and roll—a musical odyssey through the soul of America. Complements the exhibition About Life: The Photographs of Dorothea Lange. Produced by Community Arts Resources.
