King of France from 1774 and husband of Marie-Antoinette. Louis XVI (1754 – 1793) inherited a bankrupt state, overtaxed citizenry, and outmoded social system. His failure to effect reforms led to the French Revolution. Louis was guillotined by the revolutionary government.
