Vesuvius

Volcano near Naples, Italy, whose eruptions around 79 A.D. buried the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. Archaeologists have excavated the sites since the 1700s, and they became popular stops for tourists on the Grand Tour.
